"According to the latest updates from Apple, iOS 14.3 allows you to take photos in ProRAW format on iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max."
Apparently everyone on the internet is talking about this update. What Is This ProRAW Format And How Can You Use It With Your iPhone? Unfortunately, Apple has only made it available for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max for now. Does that mean the other iPhones can't take photos in RAW mode?
I'm sure you are as curious as I am.
This blog is a sacred guide for anyone interested in the ProRAW format and the smallest possible details. Let's examine what this is about now.
What is Apple ProRAW?
ProRAW is a format that gives you the upper hand when editing your photos. The lighting of the image is not preset so you can enhance it in the format you want. If you are taking a picture in Night Mode and want to brighten the picture so it looks like a daytime picture, you should take it in ProRAW Mode.
You may be wondering how that is even possible? This is because Apple ProRAW merges the information of a standard RAW format with iPhone image processing. This way you can play around with the exposure, color, and white balance of the image.
These recordings can be edited using any third-party application or in the photo app itself. The program format images become larger. Hence, they could drain your memory quickly.
Note: The ProRAW format can capture images with Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, and Night Mode functions, but cannot be used with Live Photos, Portrait Mode, or video recording.
What is the difference between RAW and ProRAW?
Most photographers prefer to take pictures in RAW mode because they receive unprocessed data when they are taken. This allows them to play with the composition according to their preferences and go crazy with their imagination. This means that RAW images are as flat as you can expect and may not look appealing. This is exactly why you can work on the image as much as you want. This is the beginning of computer photography.
The ProRAW mode, on the other hand, gives the RAW format the Apple touch. This means that it is a slightly processed image, so in a better format than a RAW image. This means that ProRAW covers the basics for you and gives you the same opportunities to tweak the image according to your needs. The program is the Midas Touch to RAW format.

Editing and sharing Apple ProRAW photos
ProRAW images are saved in the standard DNG format. Make sure the image is saved with a .dng extension to edit later. They can be edited with photos on iPhone as well as third-party RAW photo editing apps that support .dng. I prefer to use Lightroom as I have a lot of professional features to tweak the image to my liking.
Here are some of the favorite apps for editing ProRAW images:
ProRAW images can also be shared with the .jpg extension. However, it may look different than expected because it is partially compressed into a JPEG format. To export these pictures to the Apple Ecosystem, AirDrop the pictures or use iCloud to access them.

When should I use ProRAW on my iPhone?
If you need to edit the photo, either the composition or the lighting of the image, click it in ProRAW format.
What is the difference between RAW, HEIC, a JPG photo format?
RAW files are saved with a .dng extension. They carry all of the unprocessed data in the image.
HEIC is Apple's method of saving photos. It's not a format in itself, but a container for storing images. This means that the saved images are of better quality and require less storage space. They are saved with a .heic extension.
JPEG is the most common format for storing a photo and has been in use for three months. It's best for exporting images because it's a universal format and can be accessed by almost any device that can open images.
Which photo editing apps support editing RAW photos on iPhone?
Photos App, Lightroom, Snapseed, to name a few.
Why should I record RAW with the iPhone?
When you shoot RAW with the iPhone, an image is created somewhere in the middle of a JPEG and RAW image. Use an iPhone to take the ProRAW picture and create the picture with the right basics.
Why do RAW photos look blurry in the Photos app?
RAW photos take up a lot of storage space. They sometimes look blurry due to the memory pig and may not look as sharp as expected. However, this problem does not occur if you update your iOS to 14.3 or higher and macOS to Big Sur 11.1 or higher as they support the format.
Are RAW photos tagged in the Photos app to identify them?
Yes, raw photos are marked with a RAW tag in the upper right corner.
