Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek revised its 2020 5G shipment projections in February this year, shifting its expected shipments to 200 million. Since then, we have seen the company release a number of 5G SoCs including the Dimensity 800 and 600 series. A new report by DigiTimes has now thrown more light on the chipmaker’s strategy.
The report says MediaTek is planning to unveil a new 5G mobile chip series that will run on entry-level smartphones. The report which referenced industry sources, claims the unveiling will take place later in July. We are already halfway through the month of July, leaving less than 15 days for the introduction to take place. That is if this information turns out to be accurate.
The introduction of a new series, especially one for entry-level models will reinforce the company’s formidable 5G mobile SoC offering for smartphones. The company’s 5G chipsets already include the Dimensity 1000L, 1000, 800, 820. The company is also expected to launch the mid-range Dimensity 600 series which is also reported to have raked in huge orders even before it is launched.
