People like the autocorrect feature on the iPhone and iPad. As a result, it is enabled by default and works well for most. However, with complex and swear words, it goes berserk and wrongly completes the word. So, if your iPhone constantly changes a word to something that you didn’t intend to type at all, here are three ways to prevent or turn off autocorrect on your iPhone and iPad.

How to Turn Off Autocorrect for Certain Words on iPhone and iPad

Open the Settings app and tap on General.Tap on Keyboard. On the next screen, tap on Text Replacement.tap on general keyboard and then tap text replacement in settings on iphonetap on general keyboard and then tap text replacement in settings on iphoneTap on the plus icon (+).In Phrase and Shortcut fields, type the same word, and tap on Save.tap on plus type in phrase and shortcut then tap on save on iphonetap on plus type in phrase and shortcut then tap on save on iphone

This will ensure that when you type this original word or swear word, autocorrect will not change it to something else, and type the word you originally intended.

Using this feature, you can create text shortcuts that let you type a sentence or phrase using a few alphabets.

Finally, if you do not want to enter words individually in text replacement, you may turn off autocorrect completely. Here is how to do that.

Open the Settings app and tap on General.Tap on Keyboard.tap on general and then tap keyboard in iphone settingstap on general and then tap keyboard in iphone settingsTurn off the toggle for Auto-Correction.turn off auto-correction on iphoneturn off auto-correction on iphone

Now, the iPhone keyboard will not automatically change/correct any word – whether it is mistyped or is a swear word.

If Autocorrect is essential for you, follow the same steps above to re-enable this option. You can use this ‘Turn Off or On Autocorrect’ trick anytime you need to prevent the keyboard from automatically switching words.

Note: If you are using a hardware keyboard with iPad, open the Settings app → General → Keyboard → Hardware Keyboards → turn off the toggle for AutoCorrect.

Use Normal Typing instead of Slide to Type

With iOS 13 and later, the inbuilt iPhone keyboard also supports slide to type. This lets you swipe your finger over the keyboard to type. It is based on the auto-fill (autocorrect) option. So this will automatically convert swear words and other such words to some non-profane alternative. To address this, make sure you use taps to type the word. This may make it easy to write certain words without changing them to something else.
