The iPhone 12 series has taken the world by storm with great new features, the most notable being 5G. However, even after you turn it on, it can be a real pain when you run into issues that leave you wondering why 5G is not working on my iPhone 12? Don’t worry, there are a few different things you can try to resolve this issue and fix the 5G on your iPhone 12 series.
Check Carrier Plan
Check SIM Card
Turn ON or OFF Airplane Mode
Check Dual SIM Mode Settings
Check 5G Carrier Coverage Online
1. Check Carrier Plan
The first thing to do is to ensure that your carrier supports a 5G network. Contact your carrier to confirm that your plan includes 5G connectivity. A popular option is Verizon’s 5G plan.
You should also check out Apple’s list of carriers that support 5G and choose which one you want to go with.
2. Check SIM Card
If you bought your iPhone 12 from Apple with carrier activation or through your carrier service, your SIM card would be 5G-ready, and you shouldn’t face any issue.
However, if you bought your iPhone 12 device on its own and are using an old SIM card, it probably doesn’t have 5G support. So you will have to contact your carrier to get an upgraded 5G SIM.
One excellent option to go for is the T-Mobile 5G SIM that will let you enjoy the fastest speeds.
3. Turn ON or OFF Airplane Mode
On your iPhone 12, when you go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data, you should be able to see 5G options such as 5G On and 5G Auto.
If you don’t see these, Apple recommends that you toggle Turn On and OFF Airplane Mode. You can do this through the Airplane Mode icon in the Control Center. Or, go to Settings → Airplane Mode and toggle it On,
Wait a few seconds, and then toggle it back on.
Go back to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options, and check if 5G is showing up.
4. Check Dual SIM Mode Settings
If iPhone 12 5G is not working, you should know about the Dual SIM Mode restrictions. 5G will not work if you’re using Dual SIM mode and either of your SIMs does not support 5G data.
When using two SIMs and either one of the SIMs lacks 5G support, the connection will automatically roll back to 4G LTE. So you should instead use a single 5G SIM or two 5G SIMs.
However, do note that in Mainland China, 5G data is supported while using two active SIMs in Dual SIM Mode. But 5G Standalone is not available.
Note: Data Roaming is not working with iPhone 12 5G
As 5G technology rolls out around the world, carriers are still working to deploy roaming support. At the moment, when you travel and turn on Data Roaming, you will get cellular data through 4G or LTE. Alternatively, you can get a local 5G SIM in the country you’re in (if available) and use it as a single line.
